Viennese Waltz
The Viennese Waltz is the original form of the current Waltz. The Viennese Waltz is a travelling dance where the partners are constantly rotating as the proceed around the dance floor. The International Style consists only of turns and change steps while the new American Style has incorporated partner separating and stationary steps.
The Viennese Waltz holds the distinction of being the oldest of the ballroom dances. It originated in the 18th century from in Germany and Austria. Initially the dance was frowned upon because the ladies ankles could be seen!
The music of Strauss and Laner help to popularize the dance and make it more acceptable. As people migrated away from Germany and Austria they brought the dance with them.
Today Viennese Waltz is a popular social dance as well as a staple of competition in both the International and American Styles.
