Thinking about competing? Learn more.
A lot of people have negative associations with competition in any context. With respect to dance in particular, some may think it an art form that exists in a realm entirely outside competition - an arena reserved for sports, among other things.
In this respect, the world of dancesport is truly unique. It combines the art of dance with a drive for excellence that only competition can foster. Dancesport requires a kind of finesse and refinement that few other competitive forms have; artistry and technical refinement come together and elevate ballroom to a level unto its own.
That said, competition doesn't have to be all about finesse. If you think competing is only for the pros, then think again-most of the dancers competing out there are amateurs, and the majority of them are beginners! Just because dancing isn't your number one occupation, doesn't mean you can't gain something truly valuable from the world of competitive ballroom.
We encourage healthy competition - that is, an environment where peers support each other along the way, and inspire each other to develop their own dancing. We encourage everyone to compete, regardless of age or level. Any kind of competition is experience, and an invaluable one at that. You never know just how great you can be until you're out there at one of the many competitions in Boston or beyond; the energy and adrenaline of the entire event is a boost like no other.
Regardless of the end result, competing arms you with invaluable performance experience: you not only build self-awareness, but gain a new kind of self confidence as well. You learn to face challenges in a new way, and rise to the occasion. This kind of experience extends beyond the world of dance, translating to our daily lives in unexpected ways.
Curious? Talk to your teacher and see what he or she has to say. Chances are you'll be eager to test the competitive waters one of these days!
