The Styles of Ballroom Dance
Ballroom dancing is when a gentleman and a lady dance together. The gentleman decides and leads the steps to be danced and the lady follows the gentleman's lead. A traditional train of thought has been that it is the gentleman's duty to present the lady by his leading of the dance.
There are two styles of Ballroom dancing, the International Style and the American Style.
The classifications of Ballroom dancing are Standard and Latin for the International Style and Smooth or Rhythm for the American Style.
INTERNATIONAL STYLE
International Standard is danced in closed position where the gentleman and lady are always in the traditional dance position.
AMERICAN STYLE
American Style is danced in both open and closed position. The dancers are free to release each other.
The Salsa
The Salsa is a very popular social dance. Salsa competitions are typically separate from the traditional ballroom competitions. The dance is not part of the American or International styles but is taught in many ballroom studios.
