The Samba
Samba was created from a mixture of African and Brazilian music and cultures. Back in the 1500 Brazil was a colony of Portugal. The Portuguese transported African slaves to Brazil to work in their coffee and sugar fields. Over time the rhythm of African dance combined with the rhythmic persussion Brazilian music and the Samba was born. In it's early years the dance was considered a religious ritual where it was to be performed to gain the favor of the gods via rhythm, song and dance.
Samba is a very energetic and rhythmic dance which features undulating type movements. Samba has become famous as the dance of Carenval the festival of Rio DeJaniero.
Modern Samba is a popular social dance and is danced in the International Latin Style.
