The Mambo.
The Mambo is a Cuban dance which features fast movements and often complex steps and is thought to be originated by Haitian settlers. To Haitians the 'Mambo' is a voodoo priestess, who serves the villagers as counselor, healer, exorcist, soothsayer, spiritual advisor, and organizer of public entertainment but there is no Haitian dance called the Mambo. The origination of the dance is credited to a musician Perez Prado who introduced it at a Havana night club in 1943. American Swing and Cuban dances are said to be the originating dances that Prado based his new dance on.
Today a modern version of the Mambo is taught in studios. It has been toned down from the original extremely violent and theatrical movements. It is still considered an advanced dance. It is popular at social dances and in competition is danced in the American Style. Quite often there are separate Mambo competitions and championships.
A bit of an easier dance Salsa is a version of dance derived from the Mambo.
