Health Benefits of Ballroom Dancing
Not only is ballroom dancing fun and exciting there are numerous reasons why it is good for your health. There have been numerous studies through the years that show many benefits of dancing.
Some of these are:
- Your body gets conditioned
- Exercises your heart
- Your stamina is strengthened and increased
- Develops the circulatory system
- Relieves stress
- Helps you lose weight
- You can tone your body and legs
- Develops flexibility and balance
If you have watched any of the TV dancing shows like dancing with the stars you would have noticed the physical changes of many of the 'stars'. John O'Hurley says he lost 15 pounds once he started the show. Marie Osmond says she lost an outstanding 40 pounds.
The variety of ballroom dances and styles of dancing also affect you physically as you use different muscle groups for different dances. Some dances such as Foxtrot require you to take long striding steps and often to move backwards (especially for the ladies). This type of movement is much different that what you might do at a gym. Not only are you toning and burning calories but you are having fun too!

Dancing also can affect your mental state. Concentrating on learning or performing steps exercises and strengthens your brain. A study in the New England Journal of Medicine even found "dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in the elderly".
Other studies such as those conducted at the Mayo Clinic and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute show that dancing can reduce stress, increase energy, Lower your risk of coronary heart disease, decrease blood pressure and help you manage your weight.
