Finding a dance partner: where to begin?
Dancesport is by definition a partner dance: it’s about the man and woman, the lead and the follow, the offer and the response. If you prefer to be more independent in your training, you might like to partner your teacher in one-on-one private lessons and compete in the Pro-Am division. Alternatively, if you seek a partnership in which you can grow and improve with someone of the same level of skill, you might like to find a fellow student to work with.
There are any number of ways to find a partner. One great way is to attend a group class; at our studio, partners are not required, and teachers often rotate the pairings within the class so everyone has a chance to dance which each other. Chances are, you’ll meet another partnerless soul who has the same dance goals as you!
Look around at ballroom websites as well. Many have community message boards and partner search classified ads, where those seeking a partner can connect. Whether reading others’ or posting your own, be sure to outline your location, level, goals for dance, approach to practice, and styles you are seeking a partner for (Latin or Strandard).
Finally, good old-fashioned word of mouth can be one of the best ways to find a partner. Go to social dance parties, talk to your teachers and classmates, and ask anyone you encounter in a dance setting. You never know when someone might have heard of someone (who has heard about someone) looking for a ballroom dance partner.
