The levels
Ballroom dance progression is based on a framework of learning for the student. The framework is based on a syllabus of steps and movements for each dance. The syllabus is broken down into three levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each level consists of a number of figures for each dance. As the student progress from one level to the other the difficulty of steps increases, combinations of steps are introduced and focus on technique and showmanship become more important.
The International Style has a relatively consistent syllabus while the American style can differ greatly due to different organizations which produce them and continuous changes.
Basic or Newcomer.
While technically not a recognized competition or syllabus based level many competitions and studios feature basic levels for the person just starting out. A basic program would be learning the basic timing and a few steps for a number of dances. This helps get the new dancer comfortable with going on the dance floor.
The Bronze Level.
The Bronze level is for the person who wants to be comfortable on the dance floor. Especially in social dances. Bronze level dancing helps the dancer get on the floor right away. This level dancer develops variety, technique, footwork and timing. The experienced bronze dancer is comfortable with leading and following on the social dance floor and looks poised with the social dances. In competition he or she will perform the basic moves with the beginnings of styling and technique.
What is learned at the Bronze level can last a lifetime.
The Silver Level.
The Silver level is for the person who wants to be see gliding across the floor or performing flashy moves. Continuity, changes in direction, outstanding technique and a strong presence on the floor are what is seen in this level of dancer.
A Silver dancer is definitely noticed on the dance floor and his/her floor craft allows them to perform in any surroundings.
The Gold Level.
The Gold level is for the person who wants to be a true ballroom star. This level encompasses intricate patterns and where both partners are experienced and comfortable with each other. This level of dancer is outstanding in styling, technique, showmanship and often uses planned choreography for show and competitions.
When you become a gold level dancer you will be recognized as and outstanding dancer and a pleasure to watch.
