DanceSport
Dancesport is the term originally used to define competitive ballroom dancing. It now any dance style which has an internationally organized competitive structure and achieved a sport based culture.
It is now defined as a partnership of a man and a woman as a couple, or groups of couples for a team using technique, floor craft and artistic interpretation to produce a dance performance.
In competition the dancers are rated by a panel of judges who place the couples based on the judges' impressions of the criteria and presentation.
Internationally the sport is governed by the International Dancesport Federation (IDSF) for amateur dancers while the World Dance Council governs professional dancers.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognizes Dancesport but has yet to include it as an Olympic event.
In the United States USA Dance is the national governing body for Dancesport. USA Dance is an all-volunteer organization with a network of local chapters. In Massachusetts MASSabda (Massachusetts Amateur Ballroom Dancers Association) is the largest chapter and basically serves the Eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire areas.
Should you choose to compete you will be entered into a category based on your current dancing level and age. So, you do not need to worry about competing against the Dancing With the Stars celebrities! Various entries are available at competitions. You may enter for specific dances individually and there are also combinations of dances as well. At the lower levels there are many different varieties of combination dances. You may have a Waltz and Foxtrot combination entry or a Cha cha and Rumba combination. Competitions individually determine what they will offer but all competitions offer individual entries in all of the dances.
