How to find a dance instructor.
If you’re looking to become a better dancer, the first step really is the most important: finding the right dance instructor. Although dancing talent is an obvious consideration, there’s more to finding your future teacher than meets the feet. Here are some tips on how to find your ideal dance instructor:
Ask a dancer. If you admire a couple’s dancing, don’t be shy. Ask them where they learned to dance and who taught them; chances are they’ll be happy to share their experience with you. At Dance Fever Studio, many students and teachers have met each other through word of mouth.
Look for qualified instructors. Many dance teachers will have studied dance in college or other teaching institutions. Others will have competed around the world. Ask for qualifications, certifications and even the names of their teachers. You can learn a lot about the style of a particular dance teacher by knowing who taught them.
Watch them dance. Many teachers are also active performers. Once you’ve identified a few potential teachers, go see them in action at their next competition or show. It’ll give you a window into the style and skill of your teacher that certifications alone won’t reveal.
Take a lesson. Ask us about private dance lessons. Alternatively, participating in a group lesson can be an inexpensive and fun way to gauge whether an instructor is right for you.
Find out how serious they are. Some instructors are dedicated full time to the art of dance and will require a significant investment in time and money. Others are more relaxed and may be moonlighting as instructors. Perhaps no single aspect of the teacher-student relationship is more important than a shared level of dedication. Make sure you and your instructor are on the same page regarding goals and expectations. Dance Fever teachers are here because they are passionate about teaching, and we’re dedicated to your comfort and enjoyment in your lessons with us.
Have fun. Learning dance is hard work, but you should always enjoy the effort. Fun and mutual respect are two signs that you’ve found the right teacher. And if either of those qualities is missing, don’t be afraid to change – no one teacher can be the perfect match for everyone, but we’re confident that we’ll be able to arrange a rewarding experience for you.
